Pediatric and Adolescent Medicine Q & A

Why does my child need an annual wellness visit?

Annual well-child visits provide Dr. Mawri with the opportunity to track your child’s growth and development from birth through young adulthood. He also uses these appointments to identify health problems as early as possible and provide preventive health care guidance to ensure your child is growing healthy and strong.

Dr. Mawri recommends wellness visits for all children from the time they’re newborns. He sees newborns once a week for the first month followed by a monthly appointment at two months. You will then bring your child in every two to three months until they reach the age of 2. After that, Dr. Mawri suggests annual visits, unless your child has an existing medical condition that requires more frequent attention.

What happens during a well-child visit?

Dr. Mawri begins each visit with a discussion of your child’s health history and any new concerns you have about their health or development. He follows this review with a physical exam, checking your child’s eyes, ears, nose, throat, lungs, and blood pressure. He feels your child’s abdomen for any abnormalities in their internal organs and examines their skin.

During the visit, Dr. Mawri also measures your child’s height and weight and tests their muscles and joints for flexibility and strength.

Will my child need shots?

During a well-child visit, your child may need to receive immunizations based on their age and the recommended schedule by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and The American Academy of Pediatrics.

Mawri’s Medical Clinics offers all necessary childhood immunizations to protect your child from infectious diseases. Dr. Mawri also offers annual immunizations against seasonal flu and pneumonia.

What preventive health services are available?

Dr. Mawri and his experienced staff offer a variety of preventive health services to help your child stay on track physically, mentally, and emotionally. For older children, he can discuss the importance of eating a healthy diet, limiting sugar, and getting plenty of exercise.

Additionally, Dr. Mawri can perform specific health screenings for chronic health conditions that run in your family such as diabetes, high blood pressure, and heart disease. If your child is experiencing behavior issues, Dr. Mawri can evaluate their condition and administer screenings for common childhood disorders such as attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD).
